Hanamaru Sanuki Udon at Midvalley

Hi folks.

It's been awhile since i last went to Midvalley. To my surprise, it underwent a major face lift especially on the top floor. Not only the cinema but also few other new restaurants opened in Midvalley. One of them that caught my eyes is Hanamaru Sanuki Udon. Sounds familiar? Refer to my post on Sanuki Udon at Osaka earlier. To my surprise, it bears almost the exact similarity not only the shop style but also food served. And boy, it was quite pack during lunch hour. The seating unfortunately shares with next door neighbor Yoshinoya, another japanese chain.

The seatings

The menu however differs a bit from Sanuki Udon in Osaka. Some of the udon are similar but here they have quite an extensive menu.

This is a self service place to you must go to the counter to place & pay for your order. You get to see how they prepare your order as well.

Like Sanuki in Osaka, this place also have Oden & Tempura as add on. Quite a number of choices as well.

Oden

Tempura

We didn't order any Oden though as there are almost none left when we're at the counter. So we choose Tempura instead. We had Beef Udon, Spicy Miso Udon, Chikuwa Isobe, Chicken Tempura & Kaki tempura.

These are we had.

First up, Beef Udon. One thing that I'm thankful of being in Malaysia is almost every Japanese restaurant serves halal meat including here so no worries about chow down on beef & chicken. This dish uses beef broth instead of normal miso broth. Filled with fried tauhu & beef slices, it tasted kinda like mee sup but in japanese kind of way.

Beef Udon

Next is Spicy Miso Udon. Using miso broth with chili paste, diced chicken bits & soft boiled egg. It was really nice. Not that spicy though. But the miso flavor easily overpower beef broth flavor. To get the best out of this dish, please eat it with the chicken bits.

Spicy Miso Udon

These 2 udon dishes can be upgraded by adding the tempura or oden. The tempura are quite nice. The breaded was nicely done to add flavor to existing tempura. Tempura sauce are available as well for dipping. First up, Chikuwa Isobe. It is actually an egg plant tempura. The Kaki tempura is one the best tempura served here. It was a compilation of cabbage, potato, onions & leek, deep fried then topped with soft boiled egg.

Chikuwa Isobe & Kaki Tempura

Next is Chicken Tempura. It was different from what i had in Osaka but still very nice. Using chicken breast, the size really worth it & nice addition to udon dish.

Chicken Tempura

Normally, almost all japanese restaurants in Malaysia tend to have almost everything from sushi to Ramen but it is nice to see a dedicated restaurant for only Udon. For anyone who wanted to start trying udon, this is a nice place to start.
