Killer Gourmet Burgers at Midvalley

Good day folks.

There was one time when suddenly grilled gourmet burgers wave suddenly hit Klang Valley like a tsunami & sends everyone into burger frenzy. Before this phenomena, there are only 3 types of burgers; burgers from stall, fast food burgers or gourmet burgers from famous (more expensive) restaurants. The wave however squeeze itself between those categories & put itself between fast food & gourmet burgers. More juicy, flexible, & cheaper than those in Chili's & TGI but better taste than fast food, soon it found way into the heart or stomach of food lovers especially me.

But like all wave, it will eventually subside & storm has finally calm down. Some of restaurants dedicated selling these burgers are no longer seen except few of the famous names like Kaw kaw burger. But fear not, there are still plenty of these burgers around. One of them is Killer Gourmet Burgers or KGB (not the russian secret intelligence). There is one branch open in Bangsar but i haven't manage to find time to try them until i stumbled upon their branch in Midvalley. I heard reviews about them so i decided to give them a try.

The bar

It's just a small shop that any passer by can easily missed but quite a lot of people eat here so it must be good business. The menu, nothing surprising, offers mostly burgers, fries & shakes.

The menu

Burgers offered are divided into 5 categories with 2 of them are beef, another 2 are chicken & a vegetarian. A friend of mine hailed from Texas once said, burgers are only made with beef or pork. Chicken, fish, lamb are not burgers. lol. We ordered Sacre Bleu! and The Shack. Take it away, honey!

As per the name hinted, Sarce Bleu contained blue cheese. Some might hate it, some might love it. I definitely love it. The patty was thick & nicely seasoned. The blue cheese however melted & turned into liquid due to the patty temperature. But it was still good, giving extra taste to the patty.

Sacre Bleu!

If you're really don't know what to order here & want to be safe, The Shack is just perfect for you. Topped with sharp cheddar & bacon bits, it was really nice. Some of you might find it a bit salty with these combination though.

The Shack

There you have it folks. Another burger option in Midvalley aside from McD & Carl's Jr. Price are almost similar to Carl's Jr minus the fast food feel to it.

Hanamaru Sanuki Udon at Midvalley

Hi folks.

It's been awhile since i last went to Midvalley. To my surprise, it underwent a major face lift especially on the top floor. Not only the cinema but also few other new restaurants opened in Midvalley. One of them that caught my eyes is Hanamaru Sanuki Udon. Sounds familiar? Refer to my post on Sanuki Udon at Osaka earlier. To my surprise, it bears almost the exact similarity not only the shop style but also food served. And boy, it was quite pack during lunch hour. The seating unfortunately shares with next door neighbor Yoshinoya, another japanese chain.

The seatings

The menu however differs a bit from Sanuki Udon in Osaka. Some of the udon are similar but here they have quite an extensive menu.

This is a self service place to you must go to the counter to place & pay for your order. You get to see how they prepare your order as well.

Like Sanuki in Osaka, this place also have Oden & Tempura as add on. Quite a number of choices as well.

Oden

Tempura

We didn't order any Oden though as there are almost none left when we're at the counter. So we choose Tempura instead. We had Beef Udon, Spicy Miso Udon, Chikuwa Isobe, Chicken Tempura & Kaki tempura.

These are we had.

First up, Beef Udon. One thing that I'm thankful of being in Malaysia is almost every Japanese restaurant serves halal meat including here so no worries about chow down on beef & chicken. This dish uses beef broth instead of normal miso broth. Filled with fried tauhu & beef slices, it tasted kinda like mee sup but in japanese kind of way.

Beef Udon

Next is Spicy Miso Udon. Using miso broth with chili paste, diced chicken bits & soft boiled egg. It was really nice. Not that spicy though. But the miso flavor easily overpower beef broth flavor. To get the best out of this dish, please eat it with the chicken bits.

Spicy Miso Udon

These 2 udon dishes can be upgraded by adding the tempura or oden. The tempura are quite nice. The breaded was nicely done to add flavor to existing tempura. Tempura sauce are available as well for dipping. First up, Chikuwa Isobe. It is actually an egg plant tempura. The Kaki tempura is one the best tempura served here. It was a compilation of cabbage, potato, onions & leek, deep fried then topped with soft boiled egg.

Chikuwa Isobe & Kaki Tempura

Next is Chicken Tempura. It was different from what i had in Osaka but still very nice. Using chicken breast, the size really worth it & nice addition to udon dish.

Chicken Tempura

Normally, almost all japanese restaurants in Malaysia tend to have almost everything from sushi to Ramen but it is nice to see a dedicated restaurant for only Udon. For anyone who wanted to start trying udon, this is a nice place to start.

Gula Cakery at Kota Kemuning

Hiya folks.

If anyone remembers, one of my earlier post is about salted caramel chocolate fudgy brownies by Gula Bakery. As months went by, from just an online bakery & baking class, the owner not only changes the name from Gula Bakery to Gula Cakery but also open a physical cafe in Kota Kemuning. Yes folks especially in Kota Kemuning, there is a new cafe in town. It's like every online baker dream made to come true. But no worries, for those who still ordering from her, it's business as usual but maybe on a limited order basis.

This Cafe is a combination of baking class & cafe which the former on the ground floor & the latter is on the upper floor. Quite a buzz surrounding this cafe during its opening month. Even my officemates found their way to this cafe all the way from KL before me. lol. This cafe currently run by her & her family (sister, auntie, parents) with her mother helping with one of the signature menu every week. The menu changes every week with some might be permanent on the menu & some change every week. Kinda like a home cooking kind of feeling. The interior is simple yet have this peaceful kind of vibe. They even have kids playing area.

The interior.

As for the foods, there are hot food & dessert served here. Some of the signature cakes on the counter for sale daily so be ready to grab them because they're selling fast. Like super fast.

Creme Brulee

We ordered quite a lot since this is our first time coming down here. We had mom's signature Laksa Lemak, Nasi Minyak & Ayam Rendang, Pesto Chicken Sandwich, Tuna Melt Sandwich, Mango Cheesecake, Creme Brulee, Pate A Choux & Nutella Cookies. Laksa Lemak was pleasant eventhough missing kind of finishing edge to it. The gravy was creamy & sufficiently thick with fish meats in it.

Laksa Lemak

Next signature dish is Nasi Minyak with Rendang Ayam. The rendang was really nice. The gravy wasn't that thick like you would normally find in most rendang but full of flavor. Combined well with the acar given.

Nasi Minyak & Ayam Rendang

After 2 local dishes, we had 2 more light western dishes. Their pesto chicken sandwich is certainly to die for & mouthful as well. The foccacia bread was perfectly toasted till crispy. The chicken marinade well with pesto sauce.

Pesto Chicken Sandwich

Tuna melt sandwich was decent as well with overloading tuna filling but i still prefer their pesto chicken sandwich.

Tuna Melt Sandwich

Gula Cakery best came from their dessert. Some of the dessert recipe even came from France where she went there for a baking class. Creme Brulee is one of the dessert that truly catches my attention. The plain looking dessert certainly packed lot of creamy goodness. The top layer of burned sugar done well to combine well with the creamy layer base.

Creme Brulee

Another dessert hailed from France on the counter is Pate A Choux. I'm not exactly sure what does it mean but it is quite similar to cream puff except with crispy yet fluffy shell with dense yet soft cream filling.

Pate A Choux

We tried one of the cake. Their mango cheesecake packed with mango goodness not only on the top but also with diced mango. The cheese was light for those who like their cheesecake light. The base was nice & crumbly.

Mango Cheesecake

Lastly, we had their Nutella Cookies. It's actually a soft cookies with ooey goey nutella & choc block inside. Kids surely will love them & weight watchers will have guilty pleasure feeling for them.

Nutella Soft Cookies

The food here are quite nice with a home feeling to it. But for those who really love the cakes, usually at 8pm, they will slash down the cake price to 50%. Be sure to grab those cakes. Make sure to follow them on their instagram for weekly menu.

Morning Wood at SS15

Happy Octoberfest folks.

Time flies really fast without us noticing it. I started this blog in January after reluctantly agree with friends advice but now i'm glad i did it. So here is another entry for another cafe found in the heart of the ever bustling SS15. My mom have her own favorite place for coffee. Not many cafes & baristas can meet my mom standard of coffee. One of her favorite place to have a cuppa is Morning Wood; quite a suggestive name for a cafe. In case you guys were wondering what Morning Wood means, it actually refers to men's early morning youth. Go google it. lol. Formerly known as Flat White, the former owner sold his cafe to another thus the rename & revamp took place.

But no worries, nothing obscene about this cafe. Since SS15 are quite pack so most small cafe tend to open on the 1st floor, accommodating what usually used for office space. Hey, you gotta make do with what you have & it proved a hit. Visitors will be greeted with a fine art while ascending the stairs.

Why a moose? i don't know.

Their staff will greet you energetically especially if you're a regular like my mom. People loves unique & good stuff. Apart from the name, the cuppa might be good judging from the number of customers cramping here.

As for the menu, mostly are the usually cafe food like pasta, sandwiches, breakfast menu & cakes with a bit of house twist, Morning wood style. There are some names which will be familiar to those who familiar with certain kind of entertainment. But no worries again, nothing obscene here except for good food & coffee. lol

Cakes counter

We had their Ozawa (ring any bell?), Yellow, Hot chicks, Skinny Dip & Bang Cock. First up, Hot chicks. It actually chicken wings with BBQ sauce, a spicy one that is. Nothing extraordinary except for being extra crispy & spicy sauce.

Hot chicks

My mom & sis loves their Pasta Yellow, which actually is Aglio Olio. It wasn't disappointing at all. The garlicky taste was sufficient with an extra hotness from the bird eye chili. It wasn't too oily as well. Perfect for cholesterol watchers.

Yellow

Next, we shared their Ozawa (ok, that maybe sounded so wrong but we did share it). It was actually an eggs benedict with smoked salmon (i wonder why salmon always connected to Japs, not the vikings). It was nice but quite ordinary. Hollaindaise sauce was mild with nicely smoked salmon. Plenty of greens on this one.

Ozawa

I personally loves their Skinny Dip (again, suggestive name). A modern baked eggs with slices of sausages in tomato stew served with slices of toasted bread. The stew was really nice. Sweet & sour with egg yolk still runny to make the stew more thick if you like it thick. Toasted bread was soft & a bit of crunchy.

Skinny Dip

Finally, the dish of the day, Bang Cock. The name sounded like Bangkok why is a nice fit given that the dish have some thai essence to it. Pasta cooked with milky thai spices & lemongrass with bird eye chili then served with skewered chicken consists of chicken, pineapple & capsicum. The flavors combined well with taste almost similar to thai curry. To enhance the dish, try eating it with pineapple. The pasta covered sufficiently with the sauce.

Bang Cock

Certainly, mom knows best when it comes to food. As usual, parking will be a hassle to find since this cafe is just opposite Asia Cafe so good luck in finding the nearest one. Kitchen close at 930pm. Coffee & cakes served till onwards.
