KotaKotak at Shah Alam

Hello foodies.

At the moment, almost all parts on the outskirt of Shah Alam are developing fast now like Kota Kemuning & Glenmarie. Whenever there are development, there will be new opportunity for F&B. I passed Accentra Glenmarie area almost everyday & then i finally noticed a new cafe opened here. It took a real courage to open a cafe in Accentra Glenmarie as it wasn't a center of attention.

The menu here focus more on fusion food came from KotaKotak's chef creativity. There is a lunch menu as well for patrons with limited lunch hour.

The menu

The lunch menu

I'm not exactly sure how the name kotakotak came about as the cafe design certainly doesn't reflect any box type.

After carefully studying menu, we decided to go for Chicken Burger, Our middle eastern egg & All things banana. The chicken burger was decent. Chicken thigh patty crusted with parmesan, fried egg, homemade fries & bombay aioli. The burger flavor owed very much to the homemade mayonnaise. Served with charcoal buns. The chicken thigh was succulent & soft.

Chicken Burger

Next is Our Middle Eastern Egg. Actually, the egg wasn't the main actor here. Poached eggs, sits next to rolled warm chapati & on top of homemade hummus rich with pistachio nuts bits. The hummus was very different to those arabian restaurant. Kotakotak hummus are more dense & textured. The tomato ragout provides the edge & taste for this dish.

Our middle eastern egg

Last but not least, we had All Things Banana for dessert. To me, this was the dish of the day. Simply amazing. The dish made of brioche, banana fritters, crushed banana chips, homemade lempeng pisang & vanilla ice cream. For banana lovers, this medley will just blow you away. The lempeng is sweet fulled with banana. The fritter is crunchy & sweet. Brioche is crunchy & soft.

All things Banana

Overall, food served here are quite interesting. Surely there are hit & miss but certainly quite satisfying. Menu here will change every 3 months so be sure to check it out.

Rakshee at Kota Damansara

Hi folks.

My recent posts mostly covered on western food so this time i post a more to the east kind of food. Truth be told, i never heard about Rakshee until my friend told me about it, months ago. Upon checking with search engine, it revealed that this place is quite promising. Hence, a first visit is a must.

Located at the Strand, nearby the shopping complex, patrons don't have to worry about parking as plenty of them here on a less busy street of Kota Damansara. Here in Rakshee, like the previously infamous boat noodles kind of service, noodles in small bowl, they served Bakso, an indonesian version of meatballs, normally eaten with noodles with beef broth. Unlike most boat noodles, Rakshee diverse a bit by manipulating their homemade bakso into other dishes as well. Yes folks, dishes like pasta and even mini burgers. The restaurant resembles your typical modern coffeehouse.

Even during late lunch, this place quite packed.

Their menu consisted of quite handful of selection. So no worries for non noodles lover.

The menu

We were tempted to try them all but my belly can only fill a little so we had Rakshee signature Bakso Soup, Baked Pasta Marinara & Baked Beefball Marinara. The experience i had at boat noodle was a bit let down but here, Bakso Soup was nice. Thick flavored beef broth with kinda like glass noodles with homemade bakso. Same trick as boat noodle, you need to order more than 2 bowl to make yourself full. To add more spiciness, try adding the house green chili sauce. Not only it will enhance the heat but also the flavor.

Bakso Soup

Their baked Pasta Marinara was nice as well. The sauce a bit sweet though yet thick. Loads with melted cheese on top. As usual, magic happens when you add the green chili sauce.

Baked Pasta Marinara

Similar to Baked Pasta Marinara, their baked beefball marinara used the same sauce with homemade Bakso. Served with toasted bread.

Baked Beefball Marinara

And here it is, the green chili sauce that makes the difference. Adding it to your dish will enhance the dish quite nicely. At least to me.

People's review says it all. This place really served good food for people who crave for something new.

Yellow Brick Road Cafe at Damansara Heights

Hi folks.

After my previous visit to Yellow Brick Road Cafe, we've been looking for opportunity to come back to this place. As usual, if you arrive closer to brunch hour, prepare to queue for sit. They have similar waiting system as Red Bean Bag. On our way there we even have planned what to eat. The menu still the same given that this place is quite new so expect no changes in the coming months.

We've had their sweet pancakes during our previous visit so this time around we ordered their basic pancakes, Minimalist. 3 piece of pancakes, served with maple syrup & butter with powdered sugar. The pancake was good even eaten without maple syrup & butter. Moist & fluffy with buttermilk taste.

Minimalist

Their savory pancakes was something worth to try as well. Chickity Chinese Chicken was really nice. 3 stack of pancakes sit on a bed of green peas mash then topped with butter chicken pieces. The butter chicken was really nice with thick sauce enhanced with curry taste & aroma. Almost similar to salted egg chicken. Nothing chinese about this dish though.

Chickity Chinese Chicken.

We all love french toast. Plain ones to creatively customized ones, we love them all. Usually, french toast are served with bananas but not here. Here, I wanna be Kaya (their french toast) served with cuts of strawberries, poached pears, coconut infused mascarpone cheese then drizzled with caramel kaya sauce with mixed nuts. The french toast was nicely done. Crunchy crust with soft & fluffy inside. The poached pear was soft with a bit of crunchyness. The sauce was sufficiently sweet compatible with the toast.

I wanna be Kaya

I've been aiming for their eggs benedict. It's been awhile since i ate one as well so might as well gave it a try. I ordered their Pulled Egg Benedict & it was really good. Poached eggs sat on a toasted english muffin with BBQ pulled beef with broccollini then drizzed with spicy thai mayonnaise instead of the usual hollandaise sauce. Don't worry, it wasn't spicy at all. The beef was succulent & tender & the mix of BBQ sauce & thai mayonnaise enhanced the dish even more.

Pulled Beef Benedict

So far the food here hardly disappoints us. It's a no wonder that people flocked here during the morning until lunch hour. Kitchen closes at 5 pm but there are still pancakes until night.

Toran Coffee at Seksyen 13, Shah Alam

Hello folks.

There is a day in everyone's life got them thinking where to eat but nothing seem to appear in that mind screen. Familiar? Yup. Just happened to me lately. Even after started driving still nothing came to mind then my mom suggested Toran Coffee. We've been there before but felt like awhile since we last been there. For my previous visit, click here and here. Nothing changes especially the menu. Just the way it was from our last visit.

The menu

There was however a new addition. It wasn't on the menu though. The waiter suggested my mom to try their new Mushroom Chicken Chop. Deep fried breaded chicken chop topped with melted cheese with pepperoni & sliced button mushroom underneath it. Sits on top of mashed potatoes. It was definitely worth the price give the big portion. Decent chicken chop but very nice to eat with mushroom sauce given. The sauce was nicely prepared. Not too salty with black pepper & mushroom essence in it.

Mushroom Chicken Chop

As for me, i was kinda craving for burger so i ordered Toran Burger. It was a massive surprise for me. 3 not so mini burgers with loaded of crinkled fries. Each burgers came with a dash of homemade tomato salsa & slice of cheese. The patty was nicely seasoned but a bit dry. The salsa wasn't that strong so you might not able to sense it while biting down on it. The fries was nicely deep fried.

Toran Burger

Nice to have some surprises since i wasn't expecting anything from the burger. As usual, Toran Coffee won't disappoint with their portion size & price.
